Dealing with Anxious Thinking

    Post 146 of 198

Always being anxious, always worrying and assuming the worst will happen can impact negatively on your jobs, choices, relationships and can stop you living your life in a full and healthy way.

If you want to change anxious thinking to a style that’s less distressing or upsetting into a way of thinking that’s more realistic and balanced it is helpful to first of all recognize your kind of unhelpful thinking habits and automatic thoughts.

Whenever you find yourself thinking, ‘I’ll fail’, ‘They’ll all hate me’, ‘I never get it right’ etc try to remember that these thoughts are full of errors. Give what you’re doing a name, a label. Call it what it is. For example are you predicting the future? Mind reading? Catastrophising? Over generalizing? Disqualifying positives? Jumping to conclusions?

Sometimes when we’re aware of how we think we’re in a better more informed position to do something about changing it.

Counselling can help address anxiety. It can help you understand what is behind our underlying assumptions that can fuel our core beliefs and why we dwell on the negative exclusively. Contact Sentient Counselling in Belfast if you would like to know more about dealing with anxious thoughts or if you’d like to arrange an appointment.
