Counselling for Chronic Illness

    Post 196 of 198

Counselling for chronic illness is a collaboration between the therapist and the client. Whether it’s you or someone close to you being diagnosed with a chronic illness such as M.E, M.S, Fibromyalgia or whatever, it can lead to all kinds of strains on relationships and limit career and lifestyle choices.

Sometimes however the strain of caring for someone who has an ongoing chronic condition can in itself be difficult, leading to resentment and a feeling of loss of control, not just for the person with caring responsibilities but for the person with the illness also.

Counselling can help you, your family and friends, or your carers to explore feelings, options for support, lifestyle choices and reframe the situation. It can help improve communication and confidence for all parties to ask for and receive help and support comfortably. It can help you develop more appropriate and healthier condition management strategies.

Whether a sufferer or a carer as you and your therapist explore options for change within your abilities and look at different avenues of support you can develop new ways of coping, help you find new lifestyle options and re-adjust goals to plan for a more positive future.
