Improving our memory

With age, with trauma, with so many demands on us our memories tend to slow down a bit. Have you ever been in a conversation only to forget what the other persons just said? Or watched a television programme only to forget what it was about? How about reading something, getting to the end of the paragraph only to forget what you’ve just read?

Sorry for the poor joke but sometimes we need find it hard to absorb information. I believe one of the things that can contribute to poor concentration and short term memory loss is anxiety. We are worrying over something that has happened yesterday, something we fear might happen tomorrow, something that might be going on in someone else’s head and so on. Our minds are everywhere that we find it difficult to focus on the moment and on what’s in front of us.

there are different ways to help improve our memory and our concentration, one is to try to reducing your anxiety. this can be through counselling, through mindfulness or reframing exercises. Also try choosing what to remember and what to forget, strengthen memory skills with mental exercises etc. A really useful help could be to learn a new skill, for example learn to play a musical instrument.
