Resilience

Resilience is a word often heard when we talk about hardship and tragedy, but what do we mean by it?  It is the capacity to withstand hardship and difficulties and to be able to bounce back from adversity. Resilient people may experience the same things that others do but have adapted and are able to persevere onwards and remain optimistic.

Sometimes resilience may not come easily. Counselling can help develop resilience. For example together with your therapist you can explore ways to look beyond the difficulties of the past and towards a better future. You can look at the experiences you have gained and what you have learned. Connect with other people, develop positive and caring relationships. Accept that change is a part of life. Learn to make decisions and take action on the things you can change, accept the things you can’t.

As you learn to adapt and manage adversity more appropriately and rationally you can begin to keep things in perspective and look for opportunities to grow and develop as a person. Recognise that failure doesn’t have to overcome us but be something we learn and develop from.
