Mediation in Belfast

With Mediation Awareness Week running from 19th to 24th October 2015 it’s an opportunity to inform people about what mediation is and how it can help settle disputes between individuals, families, communities, businesses, churches and community organisation.

Mediation is a facilitated negotiation, a process where opposing parties take part in and agree on a solution or settlement to a dispute. This agreement is reached by the opposing parties with the help of mediators who don’t judge or impose solutions or settlements. It is more cost and time effective than going to court.

The process usually begins with initial meetings with the separate parties to explore the contentious issues. Then afterwards both parties are brought together in a joint session facilitated by the mediator, though it is common practice for mediation to be facilitated by two mediators.

Depending on the case there can be one, two or three or more joint sessions before an agreement is reached. The resolution is not imposed by the mediator but arrived at satisfactorily by all parties and is voluntary. This helps to reduce the possibility of future tension or escalation.

The mediation is a voluntary and confidential process. What is discussed is not shared outside of the mediation with others.
