Events that lead to post-traumatic stress disorder can be so overwhelming and frightening that they would upset  anyone. Almost everyone experiences at least some of the reactions associated with post traumatic stress following a traumatic event. This is when your sense of safety and trust is shaken. During this time it’s normal to feel angry, disconnected, numb or guilty. It’s common to find it difficult to stop thinking about what happened as you ruminate over the events over and over again.

The important thing to remember is these are normal reactions to abnormal events. For most people these symptoms are short-lived. They may last from a few days to six weeks, but they gradually lift. However if they don’t begin to decrease you may go on to develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).  You don’t feel a little better each day. In fact, you may start to feel worse as the reactions to the traumatic event become the new normal.

Recognizing you need help is a positive sign

There are many ways of working through PTSD in counselling, from cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), EMDR, Rewind Therapy and so on.
