Setting SMART Goals

    Post 187 of 198

Thinking about setting SMART goals? SMART goals are Specific, Measured, Achievable, Realistic and Time orientated.

Specific – What exactly do you want to be?  Be positive!  “I want to get fit” rather than “I tired of being fat and lazy”

Measureable – Getting thinner is not measureable.  Losing 5 pounds is.  Break down the bigger objective into smaller steps that you can measure and control over a period of time.

Achievable –  Your emotional state can influence your behaviour and outcomes so be aware of negative self talk.  This is when you question your own worth and abilities with destructive thoughts often spoken out loud when angry with yourself can become self defeating behaviour. You can control what you do.

Realistic –You are more likely to succeed if you publicly declare or commit to your goals to change, so maybe ask a friend to go along with you on the journey.  Make sure you have set goals and steps that you can control.  The clearer you understand, value and can picture change, the better your chances!  Avoid old situations that may stimulate old behaviour.  Remember you are more likely to succeed in changing behaviour than breaking a habit.   So don’t just join the gym… Go to the gym!

Time Related – Be patient with yourself! Changes worth making take time. You are worth the time it takes to invest in becoming the person you want to be.  It is better to set small goals you can achieve in a month in order to reach the goal you want in the long term
