Homelessness Prevention

The ethos of homelessness prevention, and the services that work with homelessness are gaining more support and strength as austerity hits more and more of us. However the popular phrase that we are only ever a few pay packets away from being homeless, although may be true, isn’t the biggest reason why people present as homeless.

Family and relationship breakdown is the biggest reason for people, young people in particular, presenting as homeless. Community dispute and intimidation follow closely behind showing that there has never been a greater need for mediation not only at home but in the community also.

Mediation works on many levels. It can help disputing couples or families come to a mutually beneficial understanding to allow someone to stay at home. It can put an agreement in place to allow someone to stay at home until they are able to move out amicably, making the move out a smooth transition and reducing the stress and anxiety homelessness brings. Even if there are legitimate reasons why a young person cannot stay at home it can help repair a relationship, help keep a line of communication open to help both parties in the future.
