Stress is perfectly normal. In fact some people thrive under stress. Some even say their best work is when they’re under pressure. However not all difficult situations or demands on us are necessarily a stressful event. Sometimes we become stressed according to our ability to manage in different situations.

    1. Is someone bullying you?
    2. Do you dwell on things that upset you and difficult situations?
    3. Do you feel as if you never have any time or that you have more work than you can handle?
    4. Do you have fixed ideas about how you and others should behave, and get upset when these standards aren’t met?
    5. Do you insist on very high standards?
    6. Do you find it difficult to relax?
    7. Do you procrastinate until things pile up and become unmanageable?
    8. Do you find it difficult to ask for help?
    9. Do you have difficulty saying no?

Above are just some typical stressful events, situations and behaviours. Recognize also that prolonged stress is unheallthy and can lead to all manner of emotional and physical difficulties.

Counselling can help us change how we perceive the world, learn to challenge negative thinking and self defeating behaviours. It can help us manage difficult situations and become more assertive.
