Understanding Irrational Thinking

    Post 151 of 198

I believe that irrational thinking distorts reality. it’s fair to say we all have different perspectives however irrational thinking involves illogical ways of evaluating ourselves and others. It can block us from our goals and can help create distressing and immobilizing emotions leading to self defeating behaviours. These self defeating behaviours then lead to self fulfilling prophecies. For example believing that you are no good at something leads to a half assed attempt which usually fails, thus reinforcing the belief that you’re no good at it.

This way of thinking can become normal and automatic to us, we may even struggle to see positive or rational perspectives. Thinking like this can lead to anxiety and depression,

One way of addressing irrational thinking is to recognize that the thought does not always match the reality. For example the belief that you will fail an exam in spite of passing every test and getting good grades all through the year.

In counselling simple questions like ‘how do I feel when I think like this?’ can help you to recognize and understand your thinking habits, challenge them, reframe the situation and address these thoughts positively and more realistically.
