Narcissistic Personality Counselling

    Post 143 of 198

A narcissistic personality is usually characterized by a pattern of grandiosity, either in fantasy or behavior. There is also an overwhelming need for admiration. Most strikingly however is a complete lack of empathy toward other people. Narcissists usually believe they are of great importance in everybody’s life while displaying disdainful and patronizing attitudes towards others and their experiences, needs etc.

Some Narcissistic Personality Disorder behaviours include:

    Demanding admiration

Exploitation of others, usually to achieve their own ends

A huge sense of self-importance and superiority, for example will exaggerate achievements and talents

Belief they are special and unique and should associate with other special or high-status people

A strong sense of entitlement and other peoples automatic compliance with their expectations

Lacks empathy, is unwilling to recognize or acknowledge the feelings of others

    Envious of others

Fantasizes over unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, perfection

    Arrogance, haughty behaviors or attitudes

If you have been in a relationship with a narcissistic person, it can be hard work. For example quite often narcissistic behaviour turns to anger towards you if you don’t comply with their demands. But working with a counsellor you can learn to manage that anger, cope better and there’s a good chance of repairing the emotional damage that may have been caused.
