Depression
With the sad death of comedian and actor Robin Williams depression is now once again in the spotlight. But what do we know about depression? For some people it happens gradually over a period of time, for others it happens suddenly. It is a common condition which affects about 1 in 10 people at some point in their life. The characteristics of depression are usually low mood and sadness. Many people who suffer tend to withdraw, become detached from those around them. The things they once loved become a chore as they isolate themselves. Many describe the feeling as being like they are in a hole or in a prison.
Depression can leave a feeling of helplessness, lack of autonomy, feeling ridiculed, low self esteem, feeling worthless, having poor concentration, being irritable around others. It can also affect sleep patterns, libido, leave an upset stomach. Even the thought of seeking help can feel like too much effort..
There are various types of depression, for example Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), Bipolar disorder or Postnatal depression, and it affects people in different ways. The two most common forms of treatment are CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) counselling or medication. Often these are used together.
If you feel you are suffering from depression talk to your doctor or a counsellor.
