Social Anxiety and Shyness

    Post 100 of 198

Social anxiety and shyness are common problems that can affect anyone. In fact most people feel shy or anxious in certain social situations. However there are times when the anxiety can feel overwhelming. If you think you may suffer from social anxiety ask yourself if you experience the following regularly.

You think you’ll act in an embarrassing way in front of others

You have a fear of certain social situations which won’t go away

You believe others are judging you negatively

You predict things going badly for you

You have knots or butterflies in your stomach

    You sweat or blush

    Your heart races, breathing changes

You try to avoid social situations you find difficult

You find it difficult to relax when in certain social situations

Social anxiety is often linked to low self-esteem. It continues because often the underlying assumptions that you’re no good in social situations go unchallenged through avoidance safety behaviours.

Counselling can help you understand social anxiety, explore and challenge negative beliefs, reduce the focus on yourself, address avoidance behaviours and manage the physical symptoms associated with the anxiety.
