Bereavement Counselling

Bereavement counselling, sometimes known as grief counselling, is aimed at helping someone not only come to terms with the loss of a loved one but to help them understand the process of grieving.

A bereavement is quite possibly the most painful experience any of us will go through at some point. We all go through the process of grieving differently and for some it lasts longer than with others. It doesn’t matter what age we are or the age of the loved one we lost it affects us all. Initially when learning of the death of a loved one we may feel shock, especially if it was sudden and unexpected. After that we begin to  experience denial No way. Bargaining Oh please no not them. Anger this is all their/my fault and depression it’s all over nothing will ever be the same again. Finally coming to an acceptance of what has happened.

It is important to remember that these emotions are normal and are part of coming to terms with the loss. Sometimes being with friends and family can help. Sometimes however the death may trigger unresolved feelings and leave you with no sense of ‘closure’ leading to depression and detachment from real life. Counselling can help you with the unresolved feelings left by the loss. Recognising that you need support during that difficult time isn’t a sign of weakness but rather a healthy sign.

Bereavement counselling can help with the healing process as you can explore your feelings of loss without feeling judged. It can help you manage difficult times such as anniversaries and birthdays.
